British loyalists in 1799 used the word “Americanism” as a slur towards colonials who favored independence. President Thomas Jefferson used the word more positively in an 1808 correspondence. In the 1850s, one writer used Americanism as the basis to stop the influence of the Pope and Catholics. Theodore Roosevelt, in his 1915 speech to the Knights of Columbus, asked for their help in fostering Americanism by addressing citizens as Americans only – not “hyphenated-Americans.” The 1950’s saw Americanism as a patriotic duty during the Cold War. This 2026, some activists, anarchists, barbarians, communists, democratic socialists, leftists, migrants, progressives, radicals, socialists, and terrorists denounce Americanism.
Since the Vietnam War, and especially this century, Americanism as a nationwide patriotic culture has significantly waned. It is time to reverse that trend. Americanists must reject outright the anti-U.S. interests, political principles, anti-religion fervor, and government practices of other nations as believed and embraced by the latest crop of neo-politicians.
In this, the United States’ Semiquincentennial, Americans should not only joyously celebrate their nation’s birth-year, but also dedicate themselves focusing on devotion, loyalty, and allegiance to this country and the ideals inherent in its Constitution so America will exist 250 years from now.
